Proofreading in accordance with SAE J-2450

In order to measure the quality of a translation the method used must be clear and consistent. The way in which proofreading is conducted and quality is measured may vary depending on the translation service provider’s focus or definition of “quality”.

SAE J-2450 standard is a response to these varying methods of evaluation and provides a single standard for comparison. The standard was developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE): the objective of this was to provide a method to facilitate the evaluation and recording of translation quality according to empirical and quantifiable metrics. The standard SAE J-2450 therefore defines specific quality categories such as spelling mistakes or omissions. Work instructions also specify how errors should be categorised and there is an option to weight errors by differentiating between “serious” and “minor”.

In this way, the quality of a translation can be determined, compared more reliably and observed over the long term independently of the service provider, the source and target languages and the translation type.

The statistical approach of the SAE J-2450 standard not only allows the individual quality of each individual translation to be gauged, but also allows this to be systematically incorporated into the quality management process. Through continuous monitoring and by deriving measures for improvement from the results of SAE proofreading activities, considerable cost reductions and time savings can also be achieved..

It is precisely this statistical approach that makes the SAE J-2450 standard particularly suited to “terminology-rich” industries such as medical systems, industrial plants or manufacturing industries. But other branches of industry can also benefit from the method used in this kind of quality evaluation.

As with our “classic” proofreading services, we offer reviews according to SAE J-2450 following translation services carried out by tsd (checking our own work) or as a review of an external translation (checking the work of another service provider).

Standard workflow

Assumption: Translation process is already finished.

  • The project manager analyses the documents sent in the translation management system (TMS) and sends the customer an offer, alongside an indication of the estimated processing time.
  • If the customer confirms this offer, they discuss any preferences with the project manager. The project is then assigned to a suitable proofreader who reviews it in accordance with SAE J-2450.
  • The results of the proofreading process are recorded in a separate document, which is either provided to the customer individually for each translation or made available in a Dashboard.
  • Customer feedback.

Checklist

  • Does the proofreading relate to tsd’s own work or to that of another service provider?
  • Should individual translations be reviewed (e.g. as random samples) or are all texts to be included?
  • Are there customer-specific guidelines, such as extended error categories, that need to be given particular attention?

  • Should tsd send the results for each individual proofreading job or provide cumulative results in a (monthly) dashboard?
